Celebrating Trustees’ Week 2026

What Is a School Trustee?
In the UK school system—particularly within Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs) and single academy trusts—trustees act as both charity trustees and company directors. They are volunteers drawn from all walks of life, including parents, local business leaders, community representatives, and educational experts.
Unlike the operational leadership provided by the Headteacher or CEO, trustees focus on strategic governance. Their primary duties fall into three core functions set out by the Department for Education (DfE):
Ensuring Clarity of Vision, Ethos, and Strategic Direction: Trustees help define the long-term goals of the trust or school. They ensure that educational standards remain high and that the school’s ethos reflects the needs and values of its community;
Holding Executive Leaders to Account: Trustees act as a "critical friend." They ask challenging questions, analyse student performance data, oversee safeguarding practices, and ensure the leadership team delivers on educational priorities; and
Overseeing Financial Performance: Trustees ensure public funds are spent wisely. They oversee multi-million-pound budgets, approve capital investments in school facilities, and ensure financial compliance and sustainability
As the autumn term settles into its rhythm, schools across the United Kingdom take time each November to celebrate a vital yet often invisible group of people within our educational community: our school trustees and governors. Trustees’ Week 2026 provides an ideal opportunity to highlight the essential role these volunteers play in driving school improvement, safeguarding resources, and ensuring every child receives the best possible education.
While teachers, teaching assistants, and support staff form the visible heartbeat of daily school life, trustees operate behind the scenes. They form the governing body or board of trustees responsible for the strategic oversight of our academy trust or school. But what exactly does a school trustee do, and why is their contribution so vital to our community?
Why Trustees Matter More Than Ever
The educational landscape in the UK has faced unprecedented challenges in recent years. From managing tight budgets and rising operational costs to navigating post-pandemic recovery and technological changes like AI in education, school leaders face immense pressure.
Having a strong, skilled, and diverse board of trustees ensures that decisions are made thoughtfully, ethically, and with long-term stability in mind. Trustees bring outside perspectives from finance, law, HR, construction, and social care, enriching the strategic vision of the school.
Moreover, school trustees are unpaid volunteers. They dedicate dozens of hours each term—attending evening board meetings, visiting classrooms, reviewing policy documents, and participating in interview panels—purely out of a commitment to improving children’s life chances.
The Impact on Our School Community
When governance is strong, schools thrive. A well-governed school benefits from:
Targeted Resources: Financial oversight ensures money is directed where it matters most—whether that means upgrading science labs, expanding special educational needs (SEN) provision, or investing in modern digital infrastructure;
Safe Environments: Trustees rigorously scrutinise safeguarding policies and health and safety arrangements, ensuring our school remains a safe, welcoming environment for every pupil ;and
Sustained Academic Excellence: By scrutinising curriculum plans and progress tracking, trustees help maintain high standards across all key stages.
How You Can Get Involved
Trustees’ Week is not just about saying thank you; it is also about inviting new voices to join the conversation. School boards perform best when they represent the rich diversity of the communities they serve. You do not need prior experience in education to become an effective trustee—what matters most is commitment, objectivity, and a desire to make a difference.
If you are interested in giving back to your local community, developing executive-level leadership skills, or shaping the future of local education, consider exploring trustee or governance opportunities with our trust.
This Trustees’ Week, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our trustees and governors for their unwavering dedication, wisdom, and service to our pupils.
